Primary among the goals of the American Society of Media Photographers is that the organization serve as an educational resource, not only for our members but also for students and young photographers entering the field and for our clients and colleagues in allied fields.

To better meet this commitment ASMP Seattle/NW is in the process of creating a more formal structure for our educational programs and activities. The board is actively reaching out to our membership to ascertain needs and solicit suggestions for better educational programs.

Ideas currently under discussion include a regional equivalent of the highly successful and popular Strictly Business seminars and an educational summit among photographers and representatives of client industries designed to promote understanding about business concerns and intellectual property issues.

We have also made contact with the colleges and universities in the region which offer photography programs and have offered the benefit of our experience in any ways which might compliment photographic curricula. Presentations by ASMP photographers, question and answer sessions and portfolio critiques continue to be a popular and effective way of giving photography students a "real world" perspective. In response to this ongoing interest, we have created a roster of ASMP members from the various sub-disciplines within photography from which we can assemble teams of volunteer "teachers" who can make themselves available for presentations to classes and student groups.

Beginning in 1997 ASMP Seattle/NW initiated a scholarship program, offering to one student from each of five photography programs a one year associate membership paid for from the chapter treasury. We hope that this program will not only give a much deserved helping hand to a group of particularly promising students but will also generate among all photography students interest and awareness in the goals and concerns of ASMP.

Please direct any inquiries or suggestions related to ASMP/NW education programs to VP of Education, Swan Mossberg by phone 206.624.1100 or e-mail ASMP education.
