Multimedia and Video: New Opportunities for the Still Photographer
04/25/2009

Multimedia and Video

New Opportunities for the Still Photographer

Is video or multimedia an option for your business? How do you get started? How steep is the learning curve?

Paula Lerner and Gail Mooney, two accomplished still photographers, are expanding their markets and the reach of their work through the use of multimedia and video. Come learn how photographers can apply their skills to these new outlets. Lerner and Mooney will share their work; discuss the basics of each medium, the critical nature of good audio and careful lighting. This is a four-hour seminar.

Seminar Topics:

  • Technology is changing how our clients communicate

  • An introduction to multimedia

  • An introduction to video

  • Capture considerations for both mediums

  • The importance of good audio

  • The importance of good lighting

  • Equipment considerations

  • Making the business side work

The speakers:

© 2008

Paula Lerner's passion for photographing people has taken her from the Amazon to Afghanistan. Since 1985 she has been commissioned by a wide variety of national and international clients in addition to pursuing her own projects. Her client roster includes Smithsonian, washingtonpost.com, Harvard, Children's Hospital Boston, Boston University and Business Week. Paula has experience in producing major multimedia features for journalistic venues as well as applying the same audio/visual storytelling skills to presentations for business and institutions. Although she continues to shoot still assignments, more and more of her time is focused on producing multimedia for both journalistic and commercial clients. She is currently at work on a long term project on women in Kandahar, Afghanistan. In this session she will discuss this transition and how multimedia can be both a profitable business option in addition to being an outlet for personal projects.

© 2008

Gail Mooney, along with her partner Thomas Kelly, run Kelly/Mooney Productions, a visual communications company in New Jersey. Gail has 30 years of experience in still photography, shooting for international magazines, major corporations and advertising agencies. Gail started shooting 35mm motion footage for stock in 1996, and in 1999 started producing and shooting video projects. Since then, her company has become fully integrated with multimedia. She has also produced two short documentaries: The Delta Blues Musicians and Through the Hearts and Hands of Children about the New Jersey Youth Symphony. She is currently working on a multimedia documentary about two diverse high school groups retracing the Civil Rights Freedom Ride of the 1960's. Gail sees many opportunities for still shooters to expand into video and multimedia, and she feels that this is just the beginning of how technology will transform how we, as visual communicators, will deliver our message in the future.

"Gail and Paula have laid out a plan of how professional photographers can make the jump from still printed images into mulitmedia and video with practical information and real world scenarios, they don't pull any punches."

- Richard Kelly

"Gail's enthusiasm is contagious. I walked out of her seminar with a sense of excitement and revitalized energy."

- Robert Johnson

"I had been struggling with my first multimedia piece and Paula's presentation gave me the confidence and tools to move my work forward."

- Rebecca Sullivan

Lou Lesko - STILL+VIDEO CONVERGENCE
01/21/2010
Please join us for a special evening with Lou Lesko that you will not want to miss!

WHEN: Thursday, January 21st; Presentation begins at 7 pm, Doors open at 6:30p

Lou Sez:

"If, as a photographer, you've thought of yourself as sort of a director, good. Get used to the moniker. If you haven't, that whooshing sound you're hearing is the torrent of change in the photography industry rushing past you. Capturing motion is now a job requirement for photographers. Capturing compelling motion requires a slight shift in the way you are used thinking about pictures. It starts with a story."
For further information from Lou about this topic please read the article wrote for the the August issue of Digital Photo Pro.
http://www.digitalphotopro.com/business/will-video-kill-the-still-photography-star.html & http://photocinenews.com/ (Lou is one of the founders)

Lou Lesko Bio

Lou is a fashion photographer and commercials director who started shooting pictures professionally in 1984. He made his directing debut in 1999 with a public service announcement (PSA) for breast cancer awareness. The breast cancer PSA, which was written by Lou, ran for three years nationally. In 2004 he began writing about the photography industry for Digital Photo Pro magazine. An irreverent style of writing and a best selling book about the advertising photography world, Advertising Photography: A Straightforward Guide to a Complex Industry, that was published in 2007 paved the way for Lou to become the Editor at Large for the National Geographic Assignment Blog.
Lou is a graduate of the English writing program at the University of Southern California. He is also the founder of Blinkbid business software for creative professionals, and one of the founders of the Photocine News. He continues to be regular contributing writer to several blogs and magazines. Lou lives in California splitting his time between Los Angeles and San Francisco, avoiding Interpol for a small incident that occurred in Brussels a few years back.

ASMP Members' Slide Show
02/05/2010
Greetings all,

It's time again for the annual ASMP Seattle Slide Show. The party this year will be on February 5th, 2010, 6-10 PM, at 415 Westlake (the old Westlake Electronic Supply has been turned into an event space). We will be charging admission this year, $10- please understand that we are striving to provide a really super atmosphere that will not only be a great party, but also attract those rare and hard-to-impress creatures, the elusive 'potential client' and 'art buyer', and we will be covering some of our costs by doing this. This decision was arrived at after much consideration, and we look forward to a great attendance this year!

We have been listening to your input, and are ever striving to present your great work in the best light. In response to comments from the last couple of years, we will be projecting the photographer's name below each image (outside of the image area). In the past, we often wondered whose image we were looking at, having missed the title slide. Title slides are still important- they separate your work from the next person, and offer a chance to put your 'flair' on it if desired. We will be running the Slide Show from Adobe Lightroom, which will allow us to improve on this- you can help (and make certain your info is right, as well as bone up on your metadata skills) by following the submission specs below. The basic projected background field will be black, and images will have a 1 point light grey rule around them to help separate any that are low-key.

Please carefully read and follow the submission specs- we have a lot to go through and your care will help this go smoothly- thank you in advance!

1) File name: lastname_first initial_01 (through 06)

The numbering will dictate in which order the slides are shown, so your title slide must be _01, and you will number the following 5 images _02 through _06, in the order that you want them to be seen. No spaces in file names please, and use underscores not dashes.

2) Image size in pixels: maximum 1920 pixels wide, 1080 pixels high.

The 'box' dimensions are 1920 pixels wide, 1080 pixels high. This means that your image cannot exceed either of those dimensions, and should BE at least one of those dimensions. If your image is a square or a vertical, it must be 1080 pixels high, and if it is a horizontal it must be either 1920 wide and less than 1080 high, or 1080 high and less than 1920 wide, to fit the 'box'. Resolution should be 72 dpi.

3) Profile: For best results, use the Adobe 1998 color space. SRGB is acceptable.

4) File Format: TIFF or Jpeg. Jpeg is fine, really, and we would prefer it for size reasons; compression quality can be at 12, the maximum.

5) Organization: Please put your files in a folder titled lastname_first initial, create a ZIP Archive of it, and email the entire folder.

6) Identifying information: Your name (or company name), or name and URL. This is the new part here; please follow these instructions carefully, as it will help us with time management. Please note that this means you will NOT need to create your image with it's own border and your name on it- please leave your name off any image slides- just the title slide as you have designed it.

Your identifying information under your images can either be your name (or company name), OR your name and URL, as long as it's not over 50 characters in length. This MUST be entered in the Metadata: 'TITLE' field in Lightroom, or 'DESCRIPTION > Document Title' in Photoshop (found under FILE > 'File Info...'). If you want your name and URL, they must be all in one continuous line in the same field- just separate them with a few spaces, that should do the trick.

7) Deadline: February 4th, 2010 5pm. All images must be sent by then- please understand we are wrangling a lot of pics here, and need the time!

8) Where to send: slideshow@asmpseattle.org

Please, don't send huge, un-resized images- follow the size guidelines above- this takes up tons of time and space, and if we have to we will resize them for you- but they are your photos, and it is best that you keep them under your control as much as possible (we DO know what we're doing, but I'm just sayin'...). Please subject title your email, "SUBMISSION" (cute, eh?). Questions can be directed to the same email, subject titled "Slideshow question", and we will get back to you. Or call us. What the heck. Good luck, have fun editing, and don't procrastinate!

Lou Lesko - Still+Video Convergence
Thursday, January 21
Greetings all,
Please join us for a special evening with Lou Lesko that you will not want to miss!

Lou Sez:
“If, as a photographer, you’ve thought of yourself as sort of a director, good. Get used to the moniker. If you haven’t, that whooshing sound you’re hearing is the torrent of change in the photography industry rushing past you. Capturing motion is now a job requirement for photographers. Capturing compelling motion requires a slight shift in the way you are used thinking about pictures. It starts with a story.”

Lou’s Lesko Bio
